Goals, Schmoals

Published over 2 years ago • 2 min read

Hello Reader,

Happy New Year! Some of you will be reading this on New Years Eve, for others it will already be well into New Years Day or even a few days after when you open this…

I’m here to say, “It’s okay.”

It’s okay that you didn’t achieve all of your goals from 2021.

It’s okay that you haven’t set your goals for 2022.

It’s okay that the last 48 hours weren't the most productive you’ve ever been.

It’s okay if you want to rest after the hullabaloo of the last 10 days.

It’s okay to start tomorrow, or the next day, or even the next.

After teaching and coaching at my gym for 15 years, I saw first hand that the “new year” was not the right time to set goals. It’s an arbitrary date that doesn’t account for YOU. It’s a date picked by the creators of the Gregorian calendar system we use now. It has no energetic value to most of us and often leaves feelings of guilt and shame for not meeting those external expectations.

So, again, I’d like to remind you, “It’s okay. You are right on time.”

There are other times and ways to set your goals so they resonate with your body and align with your own way of being. There are ways to set your goals so you believe you can achieve them. There are ways to set your goals that allow you to trust yourself again.

Tonight, I’m spending a quiet night at home, watching one of my favorite movies, The Greatest Showman. All of it’s themes and lessons are circling back into my world right now. There was a song, “This is Me” that is a powerful anthem for me. I wrote a short article a while back about it if you’d like to explore the power of this song and its message as we transition into a new year. You can go here to read that article.

This year, set your goals (or vision) from a place of being enough. This year, choose your own timing. Use astrology, use Wednesday, use your birthday or use January 1 if that works for you. Let it be your choice. This year, breathe life into your dreams with your actions, rest included.

My wish for you is that your New Year has been perfect for you.

My wish for you is that you have patience and grace with yourself for maybe not being exactly where you thought you should be right now.

My wish for you is that this year allows you to find and own the power inside you.

Much love and I’ll see you “next year”! (Have to fit in the most overused joke on December 31st.) I always love to hear from you so if this resonated or you’d like to share your thoughts with me, please hit reply.

Hello Reader, This is an unusual email for me to send and yet, I felt a strong need to share this project with you. My teenager's violin teacher, Kerstin Tenney, is creating a Solo album. She's been talking about this ever since she became our teacher and she recently started a Kickstarter to help her raise funds for completing it. Of course, I have been excited for her and kept meaning to check out the page, but you know how life is, right? Well, the Kickstarter ends on Monday, 1/31, so I...

Hello Reader, Here in the US, we are celebrating Martin Luther King Day. I have always loved learning about Martin Luther King and I find that the more I dive into who he was, the more I resonate with his teachings. I also fondly look forward to this weekend, because it is when I became a mother 17 years ago. Motherhood was something I was very afraid of. I was 30 years old and at the time, I was leaning towards being an "old-maid" in motherhood terms. My first pregnancy ended in a...
